Eric Horvitz is a technical fellow at Microsoft, where he serves as the company’s first Chief Scientific Officer. He has made contributions on addressing challenges of machine learning, reasoning, and decision making amidst the complexities of the open world, including probabilistic and decision-theoretic representations for reasoning and action, models of bounded rationality, and human-AI complementarity and coordination. Eric received the Feigenbaum Prize and the Allen Newell Prize for contributions to AI. He has served as president of the AAAI, and on advisory boards for a number of scientific committees and foundations, including the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB), the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine, the Allen Institute for AI, the National Security Commission on AI, and the Partnership on AI. Beyond technical work, he has pursued efforts and studies on the influences of AI on people and society, including issues around ethics, law, and safety. At Stanford, Eric established the One Hundred Year Study on AI. Eric received both a PhD and MD from Stanford.
